'ELASTICITY and softness of the skin are closely related to the water content in the stratum corneum, as well as the compactness of the dermis (linked to the content of mucopolysaccharides and their degree of hydration).
The hydration of the stratum corneum can be compromised by various exogenous and endogenous factors.
In first place we find environmental factors (smog, sun, wind, etc.) but time also affects hydration because with advancing age the quantity of glycosaminoglycans (once also called mucopolysaccharides) produced by the cells of the dermis, the fibroblasts, decreases. Glycosoaminoglycans and among these, in particular, hyaluronic acid promote skin hydration because they are able to bind water in the interfibrillar spaces and act as "cementing agents" on the cells and dermal fibers.
Hyaluramine, a precursor of the synthesis of mucopolysaccharides, is completely absorbed through the epidermis and therefore provides the essential substrate at the dermal level for the synthesis of mucopolysaccharides, responsible for trophism, elasticity and the normal state of hydration of the skin.
A hydrating treatment must be able to carry out its action at two different levels:
* deep
* superficial
On the one hand, it must provide hydrating factors that increase the water content of the stratum corneum and reduce drying due to excessive evaporation of the most superficial layers, on the other, it must be able to contribute to the replenishment of mucopolysaccharides in the dermis.
Good hydration:
* reduces skin flaking
* maintains a proper balance between water and lipids of the superficial film
* increases the level of dermal hydration with the increase of mucopolysaccharides
* helps maintain skin elasticity and firmness
